Intrigued by the title? I thought so. But reading through a press release just made my day. The Vietnam ministry of information and communications asked Vietnamese companies to limit as much as possible imports of Apple’s Iphone. Why in the world would they do that? Because like many other emerging countries, Vietnam is doing its best to avoid commercial deficits by increasing exports and diminishing imports. Obviously, Iphones and other objects considered as “luxury items” can make a difference given their very expensive cost. Vietnam’s deficit grew 8% in April to $1.25 billion.

So get consumers to NOT want the Iphone

Of course, I found it very funny to imagine the reaction of Vietnam’s phone operators. How can they not sell Iphone’s when that is what consumers are looking for? I guess that is their problem but it is very difficult to imagine such a message in the US.  And I can’t imagine it working very well. To be fair, alternatives to the Iphone are still very different. The apps offered make it a unique phone and while that can be problematic for a country trying to limits its imports, I don’t see the Iphone as a major threat to world trade flows. Maybe I have just not thought about it enough? You tell me what you think about the idea.

So why single out the Iphone?

I guess that is my main question. Surely some luxury cars, watches or other items have more weight when it comes to imports right? Or has the Iphone gone so mainstream that it can impact an economy by itself? And Vietnam might be an emerging economy but by 2050, its GDP is forecast to be above Canada’s, not that bad right? I guess that will happen unless Vietnamese citizens get addicted to the Iphone/Ipad/Ipod’s of this world:)

Does anybody have an estimated selling price of how significantly the iPhone 4 16GB will be when the iPhone five Arrives out upcoming year. Usually the latest/present iPhone would go inexpensive when a new iPhone comes out – When the iPhone four arrived out the 3GS when inexpensive, when the 3GS came out, the 3G when cheaper. (If you get what I necessarily mean).

@Iphone 5 release – Difficult to say but I would assume that it would have a limited effect on Apple.
