The US economy is slowly trying to recover from what has been the worst financial crisis since the great depression. So you would think that most sector ETF’s struggled in 2010 right? Not quite. The fact is that the market often anticipates the recovery which results in a quicker recovery for the sector ETF’s. How quickly? Let’s take a quick look at the main sector ETF’s, the SPDR’s:

[table “223” not found /]

The top performer was the Retail Sector ETF (XRT) which nearly returned 40%! Very ironic when you consider the state of the American consumer with the unemployment rate still at nearly 10%. Utilities (XLU) and technology (XLK) lagged far behind which does make some sense but I would still expect a rebound in both sectors for 2011.

My top pick among these for 2011 is XLI – the Industrial ETF. What is yours?

Disclosure: No positions on these ETF’s

I am quite surprised with Retail Sector ETF (XRT)!! I really thought that it would be the loser!! My top pick is Energy XLE. I think that 2011 will be a great year still for the energy sector.

@Zavi – I would agree with you, difficult to say over one year and I don’t think energy would be my top choice but it would one of my picks!
