By: ispeculatornew | Date posted: 03.19.2015 (4:13 am)

oil-sands2As many of you know the Ultimate Sustainable dividend portfolio was built over a year ago as an attempt to slowly become financially free. I usually do monthly updates but I got late on this latest update and one month slow became 2-3… but I’m back, and ready to get more active:) There is certainly good and bad news here:

Returns

This is unfortunately the bad part in terms of now lagging the S&P500 total return index by a few thousand dollars, there are a few factors that would explain the lag, the main ones in my opinion:
-oil: the USDP has a lot more correlation with the price of oil than the S&P500 which certainly played a role
-bonds: we added some other types of exposure such as bonds, through ETF’s which will tend to outperform in tough markets and underperform in rising ones.
-Mattel: clearly, this has been a difficult one to hold on to and I’ll certainly review it but just look at this chart:

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio – October 2014 Update – Tough Market

By: ispeculatornew | Date posted: 10.17.2014 (3:00 am)

Dollar treeAs many of you know the Ultimate Sustainable dividend portfolio was built over a year ago as an attempt to slowly become financially free. It is the most important part of my passive income plan and in weeks like the past 2 ones where we start to see panic in the financial markets, it’s a good process for me to go back and see how the portfolio is doing.

As is always the case, you can get extra information in my newsletter, it’s free to sign up for here:

It has not happened much but this October will actually generate less money than October 2013 ($30.78 vs $41 last year). I’d have to check but I’d imagine it’s caused by a company moving its dividend dates a bit. Not a big deal but I’ll certainly continue to monitor.

VWO Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets Dividend increase of 6.7%

Returns

These are volatile times in the financial markets and in days like these, I’m thankful that I have some strategies where the focus isn’t as much about the value of the portfolio but rather the income that the portfolio generates. That being said, as we’d expect, the portfolio did out-grow the S&P500.
The worst return:
Dover Corp (DOV) -16,49%
The best return:
Vanguard Total Bond Market (BND) +1,1%
Clearly vindication that in a down market, there is a lot of value in holding some other asset classes.

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio – September 2014 Update – Moving Ahead

Dollar treeAs many of you know the Ultimate Sustainable dividend portfolio was built over a year ago as an attempt to slowly become financially free. By that I mean having enough passive income to not “need” to work any longer. I track my progress every month and I’m looking at many different ways to get that done which include real estate, my own business, etc. That being said, the core of my strategy relies on income generated from my portfolios.

The USDP, along with my ETF portfolio generate the bulk of my passive income and I decided to track this with a monthly post in order to keep myself accountable and also because I’ve heard from many of you that this would be helpful.

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio News

Not much to report here. I can’t say I’d blame these companies for not announcing dividend increases in the middle of the summer!

Returns

Overall returns continue to be decent but I did not yet catch up on that S&P500 uptick. The main stocks that have let me down from that perspective so far this year are:
Mattell (MAT): -26% so far this year (total return)
ETN Corp (ETN): -10,55%
Of course, it’s one more example of the importance of diversification in a portfolio like this one.

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio News

Not much to report here. I can’t say I’d blame these companies for not announcing dividend increases in the middle of the summer!

Returns

Unfortunately, the news isn’t as good here. Yes, part of it is the type of portfolio that I run. Having a dividend portfolio usually means having a low beta portfolio. So you’d expect it to underperform in fast rising markets but to do much better in market declines. Since the last update, the overall market is up 2% (including dividends). The USDP is only up about 1.3%. Why? Just look at these 2 stocks compared to the overall market:

MAT Chart

MAT data by YCharts

So the USDP now trails the S&P500 total return and will hopefully make up for it!

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio – June 2014 Update – Not Slowing Down!

By: ispeculatornew | Date posted: 06.18.2014 (3:00 am)

moneytreeIn September 2011, I did some in-depth research to find long term sustainable dividend stocks and have been doing updates on this Ultimate Sustainable dividend portfolio since then in the attempt to show how well such a portfolio can perform over the long term. I would personally say that things have been going very well and will certainly continue to evolve. I do have a few more things planned which I will discuss in the near future.

The USDP is obviously a critical part of my now very public quest to replace my job income with passive income. you can see my most recent update here.

The past month was an active one as I did a few “major” trades in the portfolio. Yes, I did end up missing out on a huge rebound in Intel Corp (INTC) but I do still feel like those were the right moves. INTC has stopped increasing its dividend which is a big warning sign here.

If ever you would like to receive updates about the USDP and other passive income initiatives, please join, it’s free:

Keep in mind that this portfolio was built by selecting 20 stocks out of thousands. The goal is not to pick the best dividend stocks but rather to pick a diversified, high quality portfolio that will keep dividends increasing over time.

USDP Trading

By: ispeculatornew | Date posted: 05.21.2014 (3:00 am)

Texas-Instruments-logo-designAs I discussed last week, I am now ready to do a small reshuffle of my USDP portfolio. The four stocks that I was going to consider getting rid of were:

KN
ITW
HAS
COP
INTC

KN is the obvious stock to take out. It was a recent spin-off and while it may end up paying dividends at some point, I prefer going for safer picks.

I also want to get rid of INTC mostly because it looks like the dividend will remain at its current level right now which is not what I’m looking for in the USDP.

What am I looking for?

Ideally, stocks that fit all of these:

-history of growing dividends (over 1, 5 years and hopefully longer)
-growth in earnings per share and sales
-solid brand
-stock that will bring diversification to my portfolio

I ended up looking starting my quest by looking for stocks that trade in the US and have the following:

-dividend yield over 2.5%
-earnings per share growth over 5% over 5 years
-dividend growth over 5% over 5 years
-sales growth over 5% over 5 years

That search gave me about 80 results that I needed to trim down from. I then decided to raise those from 5% to 9% and to not consider stocks that had a debt to market cap over 50%. I also took out stocks with a payout ratio above 60%

The very positive news of course is seeing that there are several available results. Unfortunately, most of them are in the energy sector where I already have big enough exposure. That being said, Texas Instruments, despite a P/E slightly higher than what I’d like to see, looks like a great diversified pick. I will use it to replace Intel Corp (INTC) which does not look like it will increase its dividend anytime soon.

I will also get rid of both KN and COP and buy Chevron (CVX) instead as it seems to have a much stronger profile. I will be doing that switch at tonight’s close.

Wow.. the below chart looks AMAZING:) I’m very excited to say that the USDP will end up generating $179 this month, setting a new record. It’s not enough to live by but we’re clearly making progress here. Part of the reason is the $1000 that I’m investing every month but the portfolio has also performed extremely well.

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio – April 2014 Update

By: ispeculatornew | Date posted: 04.15.2014 (3:00 am)

moneytreeIn September 2011, I did some in-depth research to find long term sustainable dividend stocks and have been doing updates on this Ultimate Sustainable dividend portfolio since then in the attempt to show how well such a portfolio can perform over the long term. I would personally say that things have been going very well and will certainly continue to evolve. I do have a few more things planned which I will discuss in the near future.

The USDP is obviously a critical part of my now very public quest to replace my job income with passive income. you can see my most recent update here.

The last month was a difficult one for the overall markets but the USDP continued to generate steady returns. I will be publishing more analysis of the stocks from the portfolio in the free newsletter. If ever you would like to receive those types of updates, please join, it’s free:

Keep in mind that this portfolio was built by selecting 20 stocks out of thousands. The goal is not to pick the best dividend stocks but rather to pick a diversified, high quality portfolio that will keep dividends increasing over time.

Here are the holdings as of last night to start off:

P.S: Small note. In early March, one of my holdings, DOV, spun off part of its business, KN which I should have included last month, I did this time.

Dividends Received

Ahhh.. as great as March is in terms of dividends, April is usually much slower and while I will be earnings over 50% more than the same period last year, it still amounts to only about $18. Ah well…As long as the numbers continue to increase, I certainly can’t complain.

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio News

Not much to report here as no dividend increases were signalled.

Returns

As would expect, the decline in the overall market in the past month ended up helping my returns when compared with the overall market. I am now slightly above of the S&P500 total return index (assuming the same investments).

Trades

One thing that I will be doing shortly is probably getting rid of the new Knowles Corp (KN) position which I got through a corporate action. Otherwise, I did end up buying about $1400 worth of my 2 ETF positions, VWO and BND, which now represent about 10% of my portfolio.

Great month of income as the portfolio will end up generating $138 of dividends, a 75% increase over the same period last year! I LOVE seeing such progress!!

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio News

A great month in terms of news as you can see:

PepsiCo Inc (PEP) Dividend increase from $0.655 to $0.5675, a 15.4% increase
Eaton Corp (ETN) Dividend increase from $0.42 to $0.49, a 16.7% increase
T Rowe Price Group Inc (TROW) Dividend increase from $0.38 to $0.44, a 15.8% increase
Analog Devices Inc (ADI) Dividend increase from $0.34 to $0.37, a 8.8% increase

Returns

There isn’t that much to report this time around. Although you always hope for this portfolio to outperform, the reality is also that I’d expect it to slightly underperform in rising markets and outperform in more difficult environments. Markets continue to cruise so I did lose a bit more ground compared to the S&P500. You can now see a small difference in the chart below, if you look close enough:)

Trades

This time around, I am not entering any new trades apart from re-investing the dividends that were received. I will be doing an in-depth review of the stocks within the next week which will surely lead to 1-2 trades at a minimum.

Dividends Received

This month, the USDP will end up generating $112.53 which is  about 2.50% more than last year. It’s small progress but every month that provides more income than the previous year is good news.  Take a look at the progress:

income

Ultimate Sustainable Dividend Portfolio News

Xilinx (XLNX) Inc Dividend increase from $0.25 to $0.29, a 16% increase
BlackRock Inc (BLK) Dividend increase from $1.68 to $1.93, a 14.9% increase
Occidental Petroleum Corp (OXY) Dividend increase from $0.64 to $0.72, a 12.5% increase
Hasbro Inc (HAS) Dividend increase from $0.40 to $0.43, a 7.5% increase
Mattel Inc (MAT) Dividend increase from $0.36 to $0.38, a 5.6% increase

Returns

Wow, it was not a good month… that much seems obvious. There were a few bad performances but by far the biggest miss was Mattel (MAT). Who knew Barbie dolls were going out of style?:( Joking aside, the company reported some disappointing numbers….I’ll be looking into if I can remain invested in this stock in the next few days and might be trading out of it next month.

MAT

This is very disappointing because even though I pay a lot of attention to the income, generating a solid total return is as critical so I will need to review what happened. Bad months will happen and that’s fine but I do still need to review the performance and adjust if required.

Trades

This time around, I am not entering any new trades apart from re-investing the dividends that were received. I do expect to trade some next month as I will review the entire USDP portfolio and I’m getting a feeling that there will be at least 1 or 2 changes.
